Lutheran College Washington Semester

January 15, 2013

Hello, blogosphere! It feels like ages since I have written. I survived finals exams, enjoyed Christmas and New Year with my family and friends, and did more than my fair share of sitting on the couch with my dogs. I cannot believe I am writing this, but a month of vacation was almost too much!

I am currently in Washington DC where I will be spending the semester interning and taking classes through the Lutheran College Washington Semester (LCWS) program. Because I am in this program, housing with three roommates was organized for me, on top of help finding an internship in the city. I am the media intern in the communications department at the Kennedy Center, a dream come true. With that overview, let me attempt to relate the first few days of the program.

My first was short and sweet. I slept in (time change from West Coast to East Coast, you know) and made a trip to Target. Sounds simple enough, no? No! Riding the DC metro is easy, but a route where you need to change lines three times probably was not the best beginner route. 3 hours later, my roommate and I returned just in time for the first portion of orientation. Introductions, dinner and ice breakers helped me meet the 45 other people in LCWS.

Day two of orientation included a trip to the Capitol and the Supreme Court, both informative and entertaining. The Capitol is a work of art and did you know there is a basketball court above the Supreme Court room? Afterwards, the rainy weather did not deter me from finding my route to the Kennedy Center to prepare for the next morning. I have the easiest commute of anyone I know and it takes about 30 minutes from apartment to work. Not too shabby!

Today was my first day on the job and I arrived 30 minutes early for fear of being late. I now have an official Kennedy Center ID badge, saw the inner workings of the building and even started my first assignment! The names of all the people in my department I am sure will escape me, but they all seem caring and willing to teach. I can already tell I will learn so much with this experience, and I will love it to boot!

I apologize for the long post but I am so excited to share this with you all! Stay tuned for news on classes and inauguration!
