So what, Stress!

I was wondering how I had managed to escape the college student's well-known enemy: stress. Before this week, I had been sailing through my classes fairly smoothly. The work was challenging, but manageable. My schedule even allowed time for some social events -- games, sleepovers, and movie nights. But this week, stress thought of me -- Abby, the one who hadn't been hit yet. He snuck into my dorm when I least expected him, piling on ungodly amounts of work. And when I woke up, all of a sudden I had pages of reading and writing assignments that seemed unfathomable to me. I had never had this much work in my life -- I was utterly overwhelmed. It was as if all the teachers had gotten together and concocted some sort of evil scheme: "That Abby Powell. She's not working hard enough. Let's see how stressed out we can make her!" Naturally, having no idea how to manage, I resorted to panic: "I'll never get it done. I have an entire novel to read in one night -- this is impossible!" I finally convinced myself to find my composure and accumulate all of my tasks for the night on a to-do list. This helped me to organize my thoughts, and stay collected. On paper, it didn't look so intimidating! I powered my way through the narrative. 7 o'clock passed, then 8, then 9, and by 9:30 I had conquered the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, and by 10:30 I had produced a quite-acceptable first draft on "how literacy led slaves to freedom". By the time I was finally finished with the rest of my homework, it was 2 AM. I was exhausted, but I had never felt better in my life. I hope I haven't scared you away with all of this. But this is what you're signing up for by going to college: a challenge. A fun challenge, and despite the homework, keep in mind that you're engaging in work that you're passionate about! At the end of the day, there is nothing more rewarding than the feeling of accomplishment from applying ones self. It is on days like these that we grow as people!
