Life Outside the Classroom
Life in the classroom at Luther is coupled with a very active life outside the classroom. Music, theatre, dance, and the visual arts allow Luther students to make connections between mind and spirit. Intercollegiate sports and recreational services enable students to learn about the values of teamwork and dedication, and develop healthy lifetime wellness pursuits.
College ministries opportunities, including optional daily chapel, weekly Sunday worship, and Bible studies, assist students in deepening their faith. And with more than 110 different student organizations--including volunteer service groups, political and advocacy associations, academic honors societies, and cultural and social groups--students are deeply involved on campus.
In terms of music, the Luther campus is alive with the sounds of seven choirs, three bands, three orchestras, and two jazz bands. With nearly 1,000 students of all majors involved in music, students have ample opportunities for involvement. Luther students share the gift of music with audiences across the country and around the world each year through the college's touring ensembles.
Athletically, Luther students can participate in 10 different intercollegiate sports for men (American football, baseball, basketball, cross-country running, freestyle wrestling, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, and track and field) and nine for women (basketball, cross-country running, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field, and volleyball). Luther student-athletes compete and win in one of the most competitive small-college athletic conferences in the country.
Luther is a place where faith is encountered, not imposed. In the college's religiously pluralistic community, a remarkable degree of respect and dialog exists for students. Most of Luther's 2,500 students are of the Christian faith; however, a variety of other faiths are represented. Respect for and dialogue with individuals of all faith traditions is consistent with the college's mission and strengthens the sense of community on campus.
