Transfer Students

We welcome and encourage transfer students to apply to Luther. Transfer students bring diverse experiences and new perspectives that enhance the overall learning experience on our campus. Read on to learn more about transferring to Luther.

Why Transfer to Luther College?

Students decide to transfer to Luther for a variety of reasons. Certain aspects do stand out, however:

  • Luther's academic reputation and diverse curriculum
  • Importance placed on individual attention
  • Opportunity to join a community that welcomes participation in a variety of organizations and activities

Flexible Application Dates

The decision to transfer requires a great deal of thought and deliberation. Therefore, we don't have an application deadline for transfer students at Luther. We do our best to work with you in a timely and efficient manner in order to make your transition as simple and as smooth as possible.

Note: There is no application fee at Luther.

Five Application Steps

  1. If you hove not applied to Luther in the past two years, complete our online application or choose from one of the following options:
    • The Common Application
    • Luther's Paper Application (Mail to Luther College Admissions, 700 College Drive, Decorah, IA 52101)
  2. Ask a teacher or counselor to fill out the Educator's Reference form and send it to us. (A letter of reference via mail or email is also acceptable.)
  3. Submit the Transfer Application Supplement
  4. Request that your final official high school or college transcript be sent to us.
  5. Submit your ACT or SAT test scores (if taken).

Additional Application Materials (If Applicable)

  • College transcript(s)
  • Athletic release form
      1. If you intend to transfer from another NCAA Division III institution, you should complete and sign a self-release and send it to Luther College's director of intercollegiate athletics, Joe Thompson, at thompsjo@luther.edu.
      2. If you are not currently at an NCAA Division III institution, you should contact your current school's athletic director or compliance officer, or you may contact Luther College's compliance officer, Renae Hartl, at 563-387-1244 or hartre01@luther.edu.
      1. Music release form
      2. GED final record
      3. Official AP or IB score reports for subject area scores of 4 or higher
      4. Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), if applying for need-based aid

      Reopening Your Admissions File

      Applications for admission are kept on file for two years. If you have applied within that time period, there is no need to fill out a new application. Rather, the Transfer Application Supplement is required to reopen your admissions file.

      What Happens Next?

      Each applicant is considered on an individual basis when the application is complete. If you are eligible for academic scholarships, we will notify you at the time of admission.

      Eligibility is determined by academic performance in college, or by high school GPA and scores on the ACT or SAT examinations (eligibility criteria is determined by the number of college credits completed).

      Degree and Major Requirements

      In addition to completing the requirements for the Luther degree (found in the online course catalog), each student must complete one major. The specific requirements for the various majors are listed under each department in the catalog.

      In most cases, students who transfer to Luther as juniors or seniors will be required to complete a minimum of two courses in the major at Luther. It is recommended that all transfer students contact the college to determine the requirements for completing each specific major at Luther prior to making a final decision to attend.
