Environmental Studies Facilities

Luther's environmental studies program is interdisciplinary, which means that its core courses and electives are taught across campus, from the biology department in Valders Hall of Science to the sociology department in Koren.

Outside the traditional classroom, Luther offers distinctive natural areas for study of environmental issues. These include:

  • The Upper Iowa River, the only waterway in Iowa designated as wild and scenic
  • Anderson Praire, a tallgrass prairie planted in 1988 and expanded in 1998
  • Several examples of oak savanna (the transition ecosystem between tallgrass prairie and woodland environments
  • Hickory Ridge, 50 acres of native hickory trees featuring a walking trail
  • Lindeman and Birge ponds
  • Sherman A. Hoslett Memorial Field Study Area
  • Roslien Woodlands, a 105-acre tract of both young and mature woodlands containing trails for walking, cross-country skiing, and horseback riding
