Application Process

The first official step on the road to becoming a Luther College student is applying for admission. At Luther, we’ve worked hard to create an application process that’s as simple as possible, so you can spend your time on more interesting things—like practicing for your music scholarship audition or planning a visit to campus!

Please keep in mind that Luther operates on a rolling admissions cycle, which means we begin accepting students in September and will continue to do so each week until the class is full.

Here’s what you need to do to apply to Luther:

First, choose an application:

  • Online: Simply access our online application. You’ll be asked to create a user profile the first time you visit and you can update and revise your application as often as you’d like. When you’re done and ready for our admissions office to receive it, just remember to hit “submit.”
  • Common Application: This is a great way to apply online to multiple colleges using the same application form. See if the other schools you plan to apply to accept the Common App. If so, this is probably your most efficient option. Visit the Common App link to get started.
  • Paper: Prefer to do things old school? That’s just fine with us. You can download a paper copy of Luther’s application or the Common Application. Fill it out by hand and drop it in the mail to Luther College Admissions, 700 College Drive, Decorah, IA 52101.

Second, round up the following supporting materials needed to complete your file and send them to us:

  • Essay: you can write a new one or submit something you’ve already written.
  • High School Transcript: have your high school guidance counselor submit this through any number of electronic methods, or send us a copy in the mail. Your guidance office will likely know the best method.
  • ACT or SAT Test Scores: check to see if they are included on your transcript; if not, have your counselor send us a copy, or—better yet—include Luther on your list of colleges when you take the test.
  • Educator’s Reference: Print the educator's reference form and have a teacher or counselor fill it out and send it to us, or an educator can simply mail or email a general recommendation letter.

That’s it! Once we’ve received your application, essay, transcript, test scores and educator’s reference, we consider your file complete and will send it to the admissions committee for review. You can expect to hear from us about 2 weeks later.
