Whether traveling home for an occasional weekend, holiday, break, or just getting around Decorah, students at Luther College utilize numerous forms of transportation.
Please bear in mind, Decorah is definitely a "walking town," with the majority of businesses, sites, and attractions located within walking distance of campus. In addition, bicycles are commonly found on the Luther campus, and provide students with a quick and easy way to get around town.
Students are encouraged to bring bikes to school. Bike racks are located at several places on campus. Visit the Winter Bike Store webpage for information regarding bike storage between Thanksgiving and Spring break.
You may register your bike for free. This one-time registration will put your bike's information into a national database accessible by police departments throughout the country. If your bike is stolen in Decorah, or elsewhere, registering your bike will identify you as the owner if it is recovered. Although theft is a rare event at Luther, a lock for your bike is recommended.
In an attempt to shift away from dependency on fossil fuels for transportation and towards more sustainable solutions, Luther also offers a Bike Share Program, which provides five single-speed coaster brake bikes and three multiple-speed bikes free to the Luther community.
The Luther College shuttle service is designed to provide efficient, low-cost transportation for students as they travel to and from areas in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Iowa. Shuttles occur at the beginning and end of each semester (including J-term) as well as Fall, Thanksgiving, and Spring Break.
For complete information, including drop-off and pick-up locations, shuttle schedule, cost, and online registration visit student life's shuttle service page.
To reduce the number of cars brought to campus, introduce sustainable transportation, provide a cost-effective alternative to car ownership, and to provide a great service to the local community, Luther has partnered with U Car Share to bring a car sharing program to campus.
Visit the U Car Share program website for further information.
First-year students may have cars on campus, but they must be registered (within 72 hours of arrival) at the Information and Security Service Desk. For $100 per year, students receive a sticker for their car indicating where they must park.
Visit the Safety and Security website for further information regarding vehicle registration and parking.
Decorah has multiple taxi services as well as shuttles to La Crosse, Rochester, Iowa City and other surrounding cities.
The Student Activities Council manages a ride board, located in the corridor near the cafeteria in the Dahl Centennial Union. Students with room for passengers, as well as students needing rides, can exchange messages. Visit the Rideshare website for more detailed information.
A twice-a-month shuttle will take students downtown and to Wal-Mart at no charge to complete their monthly shopping needs.
