Semester and Academic Year Programs
Choosing a Program
Students wishing to study abroad for a semester or year have four options:
- Programs that Luther sponsors;
- Programs offered by selected program providers (such as Institute for the International Education of Students, Institute for Study Abroad/Butler University, DiS, and AustraLearn);
- Programs offered through other U.S. colleges/universities; or
- Direct enrollment at selected universities.
Students may study for:
- A semester;
- A summer;
- A combination of a semester and summer or January Term; or
- A full calendar year.
Regardless of their program location, students are subject to Luther study abroad policies as well as those of the programs to which they apply.
Please note that application deadlines vary and that Luther's internal deadlines may be different than those listed in program materials or websites. Students should consult with the Luther College study abroad adviser before applying to a program.
Diverse Instruction
Extended programs of study offer a variety of instruction. On the Luther Nottingham Year (September to June) and Münster Spring Semester Program (February to May), students are accompanied by a Luther faculty member and travel and study with other Luther students.
On the Nottingham Program, students earn credit at a university and in courses taught or coordinated by the Luther faculty director. While on the Münster Exchange Program (October to July or March to July), students study at a local university alongside local students.
On the Luther Malta and the Mediterranean, and Scandinavia and the Baltic programs, students are accompanied by a Luther or Concordia faculty member and travel and study with other Luther and Concordia College students.
Students who participate in the LCCT/Luther Tanzania Semester Program, the LCCC/Luther China Semester Program, the JASIN/Luther Japan Semester Program, or the Telemark College/Luther Semester Program in Norway study with other U.S. college students at local universities and may or may not be accompanied by a U.S. college faculty director.
Costs and Scholarships
Program costs vary and are available from the program sponsor. Read an overview at http://www.luther.edu/academics/study-abroad/semester/costs/index.html.
Students should refer to the Luther Financial Aid Office at www.luther.edu/financial-aid/current/study-abroad/ for information on financial aid eligibility. Students who receive Pell Grants as a portion of their financial aid package are also eligible to apply for a Gilman scholarship (competitive) at www.iie.org/gilman.
Program-specific financial assistance information can be found on the programs' respective websites.
