The Nottingham Year is based on community: students live together in a flat leased by the college and have the opportunity to be involved in a community service project of their choosing. A Luther faculty director lives in a leased house near the student flat and serves as the resident director for the year. The faculty director coordinates/teaches three courses throughout the year which all students take. One of these courses includes significant group travel throughout the United Kingdom and perhaps Ireland. Students also take coursework at the University of Nottingham.
Germany—Münster Exhchange Program: The Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität
October to July; March to July (check dates with German professor Sören Steding)

Eligibility: Juniors, seniors; 3.0 minimum GPA; minimum two years college-level German or the equivalent.

The Münster Exchange offers students with advanced German language skills the opportunity to study in a German university setting. Students study Germany language and courses for which they have met the prerequisites at the university.
Germany—Münster Semester Program
February to May

Eligibility: Second-semester sophomores, juniors, seniors; 2.5 minimum GPA; German 101 required; other entry levels require completion of German 201 or German 344/345

Students are eligible to receive all financial aid for which they qualify, except for work-study and music scholarships. Students who receive Pell Grants as a portion of their financial aid package are also eligible to apply for a Gilman Scholarship (competitive). The Münster Semester is offered in even-numbered spring semester and offers students with various levels of German language skill the opportunity to study in Münster, live with host families, and earn Luther College credit for German language, Paideia II, and religion.
Malta and the Mediterranean (based in Sliema)

Enrolllment: 15 (6-7 Luther students)
Eligibility: Must have successfully completed a minimum of three semesters of study by January 2006 with a GPA of 2.5 or above and be in good academic and disciplinary standing
Program fee: Luther comprehensive fee plus airfare ($1,350), room deposit of $100; textbook rental of $75 (fee covers tuition; room; board except during program vacations; group travel in the Mediterranean region)

Four house courses of 4 credits. The courses are coordinated by the faculty director with guest lectures by University of Malta faculty and include experimental learning travel components.
Norway—Scandinavia and the Baltic (based in Lillehammer)

Program fee: Luther comprehensive fee; Minneapolis-Oslo airfare (approximately $900), room deposit of $100, textbook rental of $75 (fee covers tuition for all courses, housing, food, and group travel in Scandinavia and the Baltic)

Program emphasis is on intercultural, international, and interdisciplinary understanding. This is not a language program and is not designed for Scandinavian studies majors/minors. All courses are taught in English and are 4 credits. One course, "Norwegian History and Culture," will be offered at Lillehammer University College (new for 2007).

Information and applications are available at www.iie.org/gilman.. Students may also apply for a Wigeland Scholarship for Study in Scandinavia through Luther College. Please note: application for the Wigeland must be made in the fall semester of the year before study on the program.
The Telemark program offers students the opportunity to study at a Norwegian college in English and to study Norwegian language at various levels. Course topics include Telemark culture, environmental philosophy, emigration from Telemark, images of the United States in Norway, Norwegian language, cross-cultural communications, and environmental issues in Norway.
