Theodor Dieter, Th.D.

Director of the Lutheran World Federation's Institute for Ecumenical Research in Strasbourg, France

About Dr. Dieter

Thedor Dieter (born1951) is a pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Wuerttemberg, Germany. He studied philosophy and Protestant theology at Heidelberg and Tuebingen, and received the M.A. Degree in Philosophy from Tuebingen University for a study on philosophical problems related to the assurance of faith, a Th.D. for his dissertation on the Philosophical theses of Luther's "Heidelberg Disputation" (1991) and the venia legendi for his Habilitationsschrift "Der junge Luther und Artistoteles" (The Young Luther and Aristotle) (1997), published by de Gruyter (Berlin-New York) in 2001. He served as an instructor at the faculty for Protestant Theology at Tuebingen for six years mainly in Social Ethics. Dieter joined the Institute for Ecumenical Research in Strasbourg in 1994 as a Research Professor, serving as Director since 1997. He played a leading role in the Institute's work on the "Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification". He serves as a consultant to the International Lutheran/Roman-Catholic Commission on Unity. He is also organizing the follow-up program of the "Joint Declaration" on behalf of the Lutheran World Federation, dealing especially with problems of the "Simul iustus et peccator". He is participating in a study project on "Ecumenical Hereneutics". He also published several articles concerning Lutheran Theology, ecumenical questions, and problems of social ethics. Dieter continues to teach part-time at the University of Tuebingen.

Dr. Dieter has ties to Luther College by hosting January Term students at the Research Institute as a part of the study abroad course on the Joint Declaration of the Doctrine of Justification.
