Michael Carey

Poet, editor, teacher

About Mr. Carey

Michael Carey, poet, editor and teacher will be on Luther Collegecampus for the month of January 2003 acting as adjunct professor in the English department. As a part of the "Sense of Vocation" grant he will make two additional presentations for the study body at large: "Place, Calling, and the Shape of a Life" and "Vocation and the Writing Life". A faculty "brown bag" lunch is also planned on his understanding of the religious dimension of poetry and the writing life.

Raised as an Irish Catholic in New Jersey, Mr. Carey now lives and farms on his wife's family farm in Farragut, IA, in southwest Iowa. He serves in Iowa's "Poets in the Schools" program as well as teaching at the University of Iowa summer writing workshops. He is a graduate of Lafayette College and the Writers' Workshop at the University of Iowa and is the author of five books of poetry: The Noise the Earth Makes, Honest Effort, Nishnabotna, Carpenter of Song and The Holy Ground (December 2002). Other works include: Saints and Scholars (Winter 2002), translations of early medieval monastic Irish spiritual writing, Voices on the Landscape: Contemporary Iowa Poets (editor), the teach manual Poetry: Starting from Scratch and two plays, A Song in the Wilderness and Dear Iowa (co-author). Mr. Carey is the founder and editor of Loess Hills Books and Carruntoohil Books. He is founder and host of Voices from the Prairie, a weekly radio program sponsored by Humanities Iowa, KUNI Public Radio and KMA Broadcasting.
