Makoto Fujimura, March 1-3, 2004
Makota Fujimura is a Christian painter combining modern abstract expressionism with the traditional Japanese technique of "Nihonga," painting with crushed semi-precious minerals such as azurite, malchite, and cinnebar. Fujimura's work is know internationally and has been celebrated in important reviews, major commissions, and important museum purchases. Mr. Fujimura is also an eloquent essayist, frequently employing the vocabulary of theology in discussions of the purposes of art and the vocation of the artist. In essays such as "Beauty without Regret," "Gravity and Grace," and in an interview entitled "Art as Prayer," he provides insight into the artistic process and the place and meaning of art in our lives. The artist, born in Boston and educated in both the US and Japan, is a member of the National Council on the Arts, the advisory body of the National Endowment for the Arts. He will visit campus March 1-3, 2004 at which time Mr. Fujimura and Dr. Robert Cording, poet, will make a joint presentation on the "Vocation of an Artist" on Tuesday, March 2, 2004, 7:00 p.m in CFL Recital Hall. The same evening, Mr. Fujimura will show his work in the Atrium of the Center for the Arts, followed by a reception. He will also meet with students and faculty in class visits and small group discussions.
