the language of music: communicating with teens and young adults, november 11, 2005

 

An opportunity for area youth directors to work with nationally recognized singer-songwriter-event leader Celia Whitler to explore the growing role of music--both secular and Christian--in ministry to teens and young adults. This workshop is held in conjunction with Church Youth Fest, a weekend for high school-aged youth on the Luther campus.

 

 

Celia Whitler is the guest speaker and musician at Luther College's 2005 Church Youth Fest, November 12-13. Ms. Whitler, an independent singer-songwriter, is a sought after musician who provides depth and insight through her music, as well as her excellence in her ministry. Ron Whitler brings close to 20 years of experience working in youth ministry.

As a performer, music leader and worship leader, Ms. Whitler performs at a variety of events including concerts, concert series, worship services, retreats, camps, local church, regional and national gatherings of all ages, women's events, corporate gatherings, seminary, workshops on writing and worship leading, christian bookstore managers. She has provided leadership at the national level for: the United Methodist Church; the Lutheran Church, ELCA; Christian Church, Disciples of Christ; Acteens, Southern Baptist Girls; the American Baptist Church and Group Publishing; and an ecumenical gathering of denominational youth leaders.

As a writer, Celia is currently writing two book projects. She has written several curriculum pieces (and songs): Firelight, a middle school curriculum for Augsburg Fortress with 5 songs; A Time to Praise, a Cokesbury youth worship curriculum; Youth Praise 2, a Cokesbury youth sing-a-long project; Several of her songs appear on recordings released by Oregon Catholic Press.

The workshop will be held in Baker Village Commons on the Luther campus 1:30-4:00 p.m.

Tentative Schedule:
10:30 a.m. Participants are welcome to hear Ms. Whitler speak at Daily Chapel, CFL
11:00 a.m. Campus tour for interested participants
12:00 p.m. Welcome and registration-Baker Village Commons
12:30-1:30 p.m. Luncheon
1:30-4:30 Workshop Sessions

All food and materials are provided at no charge.
