How can our churches become more actively involved in caring for God’s creation? Bring a team from your congregation to learn about:

  • Water quality, energy and global warming issues that are already dramatically affecting our homes and churches.
  • Reasonable changes your congregation can make to lower cost and care for creation
  • How-to-do-it strategies to get people involved—from churches that have already done it.

MEET THE INTERN

Erin Brock is a 3rd year student at Luther College majoring in religion and international studies. Erin’s interest in creation care began in high school where she took Environmental Economics, a course that looked at the environmental costs and benefits to business. At Luther, she participated in the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize Forum, Striving for Peace: Sustaining the Planet. Her study abroad experience in Tanzania demonstrated for her the interdependence of human and environmental issues. A January term course in 2006, Environmental Ethics, taught at Holden Village in Chelan, WA, gave her the opportunity to “grapple with the complexity of balancing human and wellbeing and to work toward viable solutions.” Holden Village is a remote ecumenical retreat center in the Cascade mountains where sustainability is practiced and taught every day. Her future plans include working for a church body like the ELCA or a non-profit organization to address environmental and social issues.

The Greening Intern will be available in June and July 2007 and be based at Luther College. The Intern will be assisting up to 10 congregations during the summer.  She will have use of a Luther College vehicle and plan to visit your congregation as needed, at least 2-3 times. She can be in frequent contact with your congregation via e-mail or telephone otherwise. She will be supported by the Sense of Vocation office at Luther College, Connie Barclay, Administrative Assistant, who will assist her in scheduling and contacts Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-5 p.m., (563) 387-1327, barcco01@luther.edu.
