stu johnston, group leader, college counselor
Stu Johnston lead a group of male faculty and staff from various disciplines and departments during the 2003-04 academic year. They met monthly to discuss books read relating to mentoring young men, vocation and faith. Group participants are: Steve Arneson, Mike Blair, Eric Braun, Greg Eide, Bob Felde, Paul Gardner, Paul Hefty, Stu Johnston, Kevin Kraus, Jim Langholz, Warren Palm, Wade Shilts. Each man has significant contact with male students at Luther. Through the exposure of the readings and reflection of the other members in the group, it is hoped that participants in the group will openly discuss vocation with students. Those participating in this group not only came from different departments at Luther, but also have traveled different roads in their own searches for vocation. With this experience, the individuals in the group will have a greater awareness of their own sense of vocation, appreciate vocations, and be able to share both with students. Role Modeling/Mentoring Men are socialized to be independent, stoic, and resist personal disclosure. When men do gather, it is typically at a sporting event, or a meeting related to work. As this group began to identify common ground via monthly meetings, they explored ways of highlighting the importance of meeting with other men to discuss and share thoughts and beliefs regarding vocation. Through sharing this experience with students, it is their belief that students, particularly male students, will themselves begin to identify the importance of exploring vocation in the presence of others. (The group met monthly in a public place on campus, either Marty's or Oneota.) They believe this will provide a role modeling experience for all members of the Luther community--demonstrating that a group of men can come together and talk freely about something important and personal. Potential presentations of their material are: brown bag meetings for faculty/staff and students, an article in CHIPS and a Daily Chapel talk. Reading List Levoy, Gregg. Callings: Finding and Following an Authentic Life Merton, Thomas. The Seven Storey Mountain Lahiri, Jhumpa. The Namesake: A Novel Guiness, Os. The Call Nerburn, Kent. Letters to My Son Miller, Arthur. Death of a Salesman Norris, Kathleen. A Cloister Walk Coles, Robert. The Call of Stories: Teaching and Moral Imagination
