As an interdisciplinary course of study, the social welfare minor usually introduces students to a variety of classrooms and labs across campus, including those of the departments of social work, sociology, biology, accounting, and political science.
Luther's combined department of social work, sociology, and anthropology offers students access to extensive archaeological and anthropological archives, as well as joint community service opportunities, including work with the free clinic in Decorah.
In addition, social welfare students are encouraged to take advantage of several paraprofessional organizations on campus.
The Social Work Association is student-led, chartered by the college, and serves as an informal vehicle for getting acquainted with other social work students, faculty, and social workers in the local community. Over the years, the association has provided a forum for a variety of social, professional-development, and community-service activities. Opportunities to develop both leadership skills and important networks in a professional field make the association an active club.
The Social Work Advisory Council assists in maintaining awareness of new developments in the field. The council consists of practicing social workers, a social work student, and the social work faculty.
The program's Lambda Theta chapter of the Phi Alpha National Social Work Honor Society serves to promote excellence in scholarship, leadership, and service.
