Campus and Community Programming

Luther‘s unique Language Learning Center, which houses a large selection of audio, video, and computerized foreign language material, enables those studying Norwegian to develop their language skills on an individual basis. The center is connected to five satellite dishes for international television reception; 14 Macintosh computers are available for the exclusive use of those studying language.

Since 1974 Luther students have utilized computers to help learn important linguistic and cultural aspects of Norwegian. One of the first schools in the Upper Midwest to make use of this motivating and effective language-learning tool, Luther has exercises and stimulations available which help students learn vocabulary and grammar, as well as review previous lessons. All students of languages at Luther are able to utilize this motivating and effective learning tool in their studies.

The newest of Luther‘s language study aids is satellite television. By means of satellite dishes and the campus cable network, language students are able to tune in to the world through programs from national and international sources. Assisted by video recording and playback equipment, the language staff is able to access programming materials from around the globe.

An important resource for language and cultural exchanges is the presence of 150 international students who come to Luther from more than 40 nations. As classmates and friends, these students add much to the social and cultural diversity enjoyed by the Luther community. Each year an average of 12 Scandinavian students are part of the student body. International friendships often provide valuable cultural exchange that lasts long after graduation.

Norwegian and Scandinavian elements are so much a part of the life of Luther College and the Decorah community that all students receive some exposure to them. The internationally-recognized Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum, located in Decorah, regularly hosts special programs in which students are welcome to participate. Vesterheim also provides valuable work experience for students of Norwegian who qualify for work study and show an interest in museum studies.

In addition, the college and community receive regular visits from traveling Scandinavian musicians, lecturers, and dramatic performers.

Study Abroad Opportunities

All language majors and minors and others who plan to use Norwegian skills professionally are strongly urged to study abroad during their undergraduate years. For most students, overseas study occurs during the junior year. Luther provides a variety of options, based on differences in abilities, preparation, and interests of the student.
