Facilities
Most students interested in pursuing physical therapy as a career major in biology, health, physical education, or psychology as undergraduates. Students in those programs use the following facilities:
Biology and Psychology
The biology and psychology departments conduct classroom and laboratory sessions in Valders Hall of Science, a facility with 25,000 square feet of laboratory space, a planetarium, a natural history museum, a greenhouse, and an impressive array of instruments. More than three dozen biology and psychology majors participate in faculty-directed research each year.
Special facilities include the Salsbury Animal Center, which houses rodents, wild animals, insects, and aquatic organisms for laboratory observation and behavioral experimentation.
The biology complex also includes molecular biology and cell-culture laboratories, a developmental biology laboratory, and a cadaver laboratory.
The college greenhouse has four independently-controlled climate areas as part of an eight-room undergraduate research facility.
Luther is planning a 58,000-square-foot, $20 million expansion and renovation of Valders as part of its current Higher Calling Campaign.
Health and Physical Education (HPE)
Luther's health and physical education departments are based in the Regents Center, a facilitiy that includes six full-size indoor basketball courts; 20 regulation baskets; a 25-yard, six-lane indoor swimming pool; a 200-meter indoor track; three racquetball courts; a wrestling room; a dance studio; six tennis courts in areas that can also be used for basketball and volleyball; and locker, training, and equipment rooms.
The Legends Fitness for Life Center, a 14,000-square-foot addition to the Luther College Regents Center, opened in Spring 2001. The center features a complete array of cardiovascular-conditioning machines, a full range of free weights and weight machines, a 30-foot rock-climbing wall, and a lounge area.
Luther's outdoor facilities include Carlson Stadium, with seating for 5,000 Norse fans and an eight-lane, all-weather, 400-meter track. Nine tennis courts are available for student use. Baseball and softball diamonds are located next to the Regents Center, and the adjacent 15-acre field area includes a fitness trail with exercise stations, rugby and soccer pitches, and a playing field for intramural sports.
