Overview
Premedicine is a program of interdisciplinary emphasis, not a major. Students interested in premedicine typically major in biology or chemistry because medical schools require significant coursework in those fields. Other majors are possible, however, if closely coordinated with an academic adviser.
Most medical schools require one year each of biology, organic chemistry, and physics, as well as four to six courses in the humanities and social sciences. Recommended advanced courses include:
- Biochemistry
- Statistics
- Physiology
- Genetics
- Microbiology
- Molecular biology and/or cell biology
Luther College is an official test center for the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT). Students generally apply to medical school during the summer of their junior year or the fall semester of their senior year.
