Facilities
Laboratories and Research
Luther has an enviable reputation in the sciences and in preprofessional and professional health programs. Both the National Science Foundation and the Carver Foundation have repeatedly recognized the strength of Luther's science program by awarding the college a number of grants, enabling Luther to construct additional laboratory space, purchase new equipment, and fund selected student and faculty research.
Valders Hall of Science also houses the Salsbury Animal Facility. This center greatly enhances study and research opportunities for students in biology and offers additional laboratories for Luther's psychology and behavioral studies programs.
The Overholt Human Anatomy Laboratory allows for an in-depth gross anatomy course that includes dissection of a human cadaver. Students in other courses such as Introduction to Life Sciences, Human Anatomy, Human Physiology, and Immunology have also benefited from this lab, as have many other students interested in the health sciences.
A number of Luther faculty members are engaged in health-related research and regularly collaborate with students. Every year their data leads to professional presentations at regional and national conferences.
Internship Opportunities
Students may arrange health-career internships during the three-week January Term or during the regular semester. These internships are primarily observational but provide a practical introduction to the many health-care professions.
Placements are available in large medical complexes, county hospitals, medical laboratories, public health programs, and private practices. These programs vary to allow advisers the freedom to match specific internships with the career goals of the student.
