Management
The management major focuses on bringing together newly emerging concepts in business under the framework of real world issues. Luther's economics and business department, which directs the economics, accounting, management and management information systems majors, has a distinguished reputation with employers and graduate schools alike.
It is the department's goal to educate its students beyond their first position after graduation. The high initial placement record of our graduates and the leadership positions in business held by our alumni underscore the quality preparation Luther students receive.
Luther College is a member of the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business International (AACSB).
The Program's Flexibility
Given the range and flexibility of the Luther curriculum, it is possible to pursue majors in more than one field. In recent years, students have combined accounting with economics, economics with mathematics, management with foreign languages, music with management, accounting with management information systems, and management with psychology.
Recognizing the need for a combination of academic skills in some career fields, the faculty has established certificate programs involving joint study in two or more departments. These include international management, art management, music management, theatre management, and sports/recreation management.
Economics and Business Coursework
A core of courses is required as preliminary work for any of the department's four majors (economics, accounting, management, or MIS). This coursework includes Principles of Economics, Statistics, Financial Accounting, Management Accounting, an appropriate mathematics course, and Concepts and Issues in Computing. After meeting these core requirements, each student chooses advanced courses from among the four major areas.
Luther offers some unique management courses:
- Management and Accounting for Nonprofit Organizations
- Entrepreneurship
- Environmental Economics
- International Business Management
- Management Information Systems
- Health Care Management
