French
Learning a second language provides a concrete experience in self-expression and understanding, increases professional work opportunities, and opens doors to other cultures. In our modern world we encounter few other phenomena as important as language.
As a liberal arts college founded by Norwegian settlers and located in a community with a distinctive Norwegian flavor, Luther College has a vital interest in European cultures and languages.
French is one of four language majors offered at Luther. Majors are also available in German, Spanish, and Scandinavian studies. Students develop their command of the language by studying in small classes, using Luther's language laboratory and computerized foreign language materials, and immersing themselves in French culture.
Seven courses form the core of the French major. Depending on previous language experience, students seeking a major are required to complete two semesters of intermediate French and one course each in conversation and phonetics, advanced stylistics, and French literature. The remaining classes involve coursework in modern French literature and other electives, such as commercial French and contemporary culture.
The goal of the course sequence is to equip Luther students with the language skills necessary to understand and appreciate the culture and literature of the French people. Each French major is also prepared to use the language in a variety of professions or in graduate school.
