Facilities

Luther's English department and most classes are based in Main Building.

Cocurricular Activities

English students come together in co-curricular activities. English majors and minors are eligible for election to Sigma Tau Delta, the international English honor society. Sigma Tau Delta hosts lectures and receptions for visiting writers, as well as the English Department Christmas party and finals-week picnic. In November 2000, Luther hosted the regional Sigma Tau Delta conference for students around the Midwest to present papers and attend lectures by writer Marilynne Robinson and regional journalist Debra Wiley.

All Luther students interested in writing and editing can write for the weekly student newspaper, Chips, produced in both print and electronic form. Some of these students work on the many business and computing details of putting out a weekly paper. Some write investigative articles, editorials, features, and reviews. They work together on copy-editing, layout, and circulation.

Other students devote their creative and editorial energies to the student-edited college literary magazine, The Oneota Review. Students submit poetry and prose to a student review board, which selects works for the yearly publication. The public information office employs student writers. Students who enjoy the theatrical side of literature can participate in campus theatre productions, both on stage and behind the scenes.

Opportunities Beyond the Luther Community

Luther English majors know how to write. Our students often win prizes at writing conferences and in competitions. Many English majors are invited to present their papers at the National Conference of Undergraduate Research (NCUR). In Sigma Tau Delta, students win impressive national scholarships based on their writing, some of it published in the organization's yearly journal. The strength of our English program is evident through the success of our student writers and the awards they earn.
