Careers
The career choices for art majors and minors are varied and reflect personal creativity and job preference. Some art majors elect to earn M.A., M.F.A., or Ph.D. degrees and teach on the college level. Luther also has a fine placement record for students who become teachers of art in elementary and secondary schools.
Many graduates are self-employed production potters, sculptors, photographers, and free-lance artists. Some are professional artist assistants or collaborators in larger workshops incorporating many media. Graduates also work in publishing houses, advertising agencies, architectural firms, advertising departments in retail businesses, medical and scientific illustration firms, museums, art galleries, and art research libraries. Still others pursue art therapy.
Art faculty encourage students to contact Luther graduates (many of whom stay in touch with the department as they build careers) and engage in job-shadowing and internships as they consider their niche in the field.
