Safety
Safety during the Relay Race is incredibly important and a top priority. There are many hazards in a race of this distance including but not limited to : vehicle traffic, road and trail conditions, and weather. We ask that every team take appropriate precautions to ensure a safe event for the runners, the support crews, and our volunteers.
What We Do To Keep You Safe
- Law enforcement notified and available where possible
- Volunteers at exchange points
- Volunteers providing directions at key or easy to miss turns
- Shuttle for transport across the bridge over the Mississippi at Winona
- Accurate maps available to each team
- Signs designating exchange points
- Signs on necessary roads marked 'RUNNERS ON ROAD'
Your Safety Responsibilities
- Run facing traffic whenever possible and safe
- Run on sidewalks or bike paths when present and appropriate
- Obey all state and federal traffic laws (for runners and support crews)
- Obey all commands given by volunteers or law enforcement
- Support crews are *not* permitted to pace runners
- If dark or poor weather or visibility conditions (i.e. rain, fog, etc), runners *must* wear reflective vests
- First Aid Kit available in support vehicle
- Support crews should have a cell phone and regional map
Relay Exchange Points
Relay staff will keep track of every runner that arrives and departs from an exchange point. This is to allow us to know who is on course and when they departed from where. Please arrive at the exchange point at least 15 minutes prior to your leg beginning.
