Alumni Art Exhibits

Alumni art exhibit, September–October 2011

Luther will celebrate both its sesquicentennial and the 75th anniversary of its art department in 2011. In recognition of those milestones, all art alumni and former art faculty who have continued to produce art since leaving Luther are invited to create something entirely new for a special exhibit that reflects those seminal events.

Works of art might address the sesquicentennial theme, “Transformed by the Journey,” or be based on a “diamond” in recognition of the department’s 75th anniversary. Artists might even explore the mathematical coincidence that the department will be exactly half the age of the college in 2011. Please note that this call is for new works of art created specifically for this show.

Works will be displayed in the Kristin Wigley-Fleming Gallery in the Center for the Arts Sept. 12–Oct. 16, 2011. Exhibiting artists visiting campus during Homecoming (Oct. 13–16) will be able to take their work home with them Oct. 16.

Because of the large number of alumni artists, each person may submit only one original work for this show. Works must measure less than 40” in any direction and weigh less than 50 pounds. All works must be properly prepared for display, including frames and hanging wires where appropriate.

Open pedestals are available for freestanding work. Submitted work must be clearly identified with the artist’s name, class year, title, media, date, and insurance value. Artists are also encouraged to include a very short statement about their work.

Every effort will be made to display all works submitted to this show, but the college reserves the right to withhold pieces that are damaged or otherwise not ready for display, arrive late, are not accompanied by all requested information, or clearly fall outside the intended scope of this exhibit.

Copies of identification information and statements should be e-mailed to the address below in order to facilitate checking in works and preparing exhibition labels. Participating artists are responsible for getting their work to Luther either via shipping or hand delivery. The college will pay return shipping on works that arrive in reusable shipping containers.

Deadline for receipt of work and electronic copies of information is Sept. 1, 2011.

Send submissions to David Kamm, Gallery Coordinator, Center for the Arts, Luther College, 700 College Drive, Decorah, IA 52101. Kamm can be reached by phone at (563) 387-1665 or by e-mail at kammdavi@luther.edu
