Graduation 1950s

•  Opening convocation, February 3, 2011; speaker, Dr. Ole Petter Ottersen, President of the University of Oslo, which is celebrating its bicentennial in 2011.  Most of Luther College’s founders, first president Laur Larsen, and early faculty members were graduates of the University of Oslo.  Following convocation, a special Founding Families reception to honor descendants of Luther College's incorporators, first Board of Trustees, and former presidents.  This event was funded in part by the American-Scandinavian Foundation.

• “Striving for Peace: Courage to Act,” the 23rd annual Nobel Peace Prize Forum, March 4–5, 2011.

• “Transformed by Service,” a reunion of graduates who served in the Peace Corps, AmeriCorps, Lutheran Volunteer Corps, and other service organizations, March 4, 2011 in conjunction with the Nobel Peace Prize Forum.

• Women’s History Month event celebrating the 75th anniversary of co-education at Luther, March 15, 2011.  A theatrical lecture focused on journeys and transformation by playwright, actor and professor Anna Deavere Smith.

• “Teaching Sustainability to Our Undergraduates,” a national conference for faculty interested in integrating environmental sustainability across the curriculum, April 3-4, 2011.  

Celebrate 150 Years With Luther College - world premiere of commissioned choral/orchestral work, "The Luther Mass," written by Stephen Paulus, held on campus and at Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis, Palm Sunday weekend, April 16-17, 2011.

• The Student Activities Council's Luther College 150th Birthday Bash, Saturday, April 30.

•  Exhibit at the Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum, Norwegian-American Lutheran Colleges:  Institutions of higher education shaped by religious and ethnic identity.  May 17, 2011 through April 7, 2012.

•150th Family Reunion and Fun Festival—picnic celebration for current and former faculty and staff and their families, Wednesday, May 25, 2011. 

Relay race from Halfway Creek to Decorah (approximately 150 km)—June 4–5, 2011.  

• “Migrant Journeys: The Norwegian-American Experience in a Multicultural  Context”—Norwegian-American Historical Association of Norway conference, June 14–17, 2011. 

•  "Faith and Learning on the Ground," a staff development workshop focused on the Lutheran approach to higher education and how it shapes Luther College's mission, June 21, 2011.  

Lutherlag the college’s multi-generational summer learning program, will include programming on Luther’s sesquicentennial— July 24–29, 2011.

All Band Alumni Reunion - Concert Band, Varsity Band and Wind and Percussion Ensemble.  Hosted by Frederick Nyline and Weston Noble '43—July 29-31, 2011.

Nordic Fest, the annual Decorah celebration, will include a special sesquicentennial parade float—July 30, 2011.

• An art exhibit featuring works submitted by alumni and former art faculty in September and October 2011 will celebrate both the sesquicentennial and the 75th anniversary of Luther's art department.

•  "The Aura of Flora In Decorah with Garrison Keillor"—Sept. 27, 2011. The host and writer of public radio's 'A Prairie Home Companion' will highlight the college's Center Stage Series of professional performing arts events for the Sesquicentennial year.

Special convocation honoring Their Majesties King Harald V and Queen Sonja of Norway—Oct. 13, 2011.  (The royal visit of Luther College is part of an official visit to the Midwest).  Contact the President's Office, 150@luther.edu

• Sesquicentennial Homecoming Celebration, October 13-15, 2011.

Offered throughout the year:

• Center for Ethics and Public Life series of alumni visitors whose lives have demonstrated ethical leadership in public service.  Contact John Moeller (563) 387-1221, moellerj@luther.edu

•  The History Walk, a living history performance that takes participants on a guided tour of Luther's past. Costumed actors stationed throughout campus  bring to life some of the people and pivotal moments which have shaped the college since 1861.  Contact Karen Martin-Schramm, (563) 387-1527, 150@luther.edu

•  "Luther Sketches:  A Light-Hearted Romp Through Luther's Sensational Saga"—a theatre presentation by six students under the direction of professor Bob Larson.  Performed on campus and at select alumni events in the Midwest.  A video of the performance can be viewed on the right side of the page above.

• Gallery exhibits featuring the works of Luther alumni, including Tom Maakestad ’80, Paula (Berg) Owen ’70, and Laura Hampton ’80, as well as an exhibit on landscape artist Jens Jensen (2011 marks the centennial of Jensen’s original landscape plan for the Luther campus). • Paideia curriculum:  "Tradition and Transformation" was the theme for spring 2011, and included the book Giants of the Earth and Ibsen's play Enemy of the People. Both connect to sustainability and to the college's Norwegian heritage.
